[/spoiler]Ramires remains adamant that he heard Mark Clattenburg make a racist comment despite Chelsea resolving their differences with the referee in a public statement yesterday.
Chelsea stopped short of offering an apology to Clattenburg but will welcome back the official to Stamford Bridge, potentially posing an issue should Ramires or John Obi Mikel be playing in the game. The Brazil player gave evidence to the FA that he heard Clattenburg say to Mikel, his fellow midfielder, Shut up you monkey, but the governing body concluded that the referee, who had strenuously denied the claim, would not face disciplinary action.
Chelsea may look now to manage the relationship between their players and Clattenburg and it is unclear whether either midfielder will shake the hand of the official. Clattenburg will take charge of Southampton against Norwich City tonight, the first time he has refereed since Chelsea made a formal complaint that he had racially abused Mikel during their 3-2 defeat by Manchester United last month. The FA concluded last week that Ramires had made the claim in good faith and that Chelsea has been correct to report the allegations for investigation.
Chelsea said in a public statement yesterday that they had learnt from the situation. The club regrets not having given more consideration before issuing a statement on the evening of Sunday 28th October, they said. The club also regrets the subsequent impact the intense media scrutiny had on Mark Clattenburg and his family. The referees accept that, given Chelsea had received a good faith claim from one of their employees, the club had an obligation under FA rules to report the allegation. There was recognition by all parties that the impartiality and integrity of refereeing in this country remains paramount. All parties now believe it is time to draw a line under this incident, learn from it and move on for the good of all Premier League clubs, players and match officials.
Bruce Buck, the Chelsea chairman, shook hands with Clattenburg and Mike Riley, the chief executive of Professional Game Match Officials Ltd, when they met at St Georges Park on Monday in an attempt to smooth out the fallout from the controversy. The parties are said to have had a full and frank discussion, but the club were not in a position to accept the demands of the referees union, which had called for the club to make a public apology to Clattenburg. However, saying sorry would undermine and affect Chelseas relationship with Ramires, whom they have supported, and also potentially open up the club to a legal challenge.
However, Chelsea believe that they were too hasty in making an initial public statement in which they accused Clattenburg of inappropriate language within hours of the United match, because of the knock-on effect it had on the referee and his family. The club believe that the story had begun to leak out after Mikel had gone to confront Clattenburg about the incident after the final whistle, as did Roberto Di Matteo, the former manager.
